NAVY LEAGUE GIRLS.
Tennis Tourney Held at Elmwood. FOR ENTERTAINMENT FUNDS. Social apathy seems to have descended on Christchurch during the l%£t few weeks, but now that the schools will shortly be reopening and shuttered houses show signs of life once more, the usual round of parties and dances will no doubt start again. Signs of this re-awakening were to be seen at the Elmwood courts yesterday afternoon when a number of friends of the Navy League attended a tennis party held to raise money for the Junior Branch's entertainment fund. The party was a pleasantly arranged little gathering, and at tea time the pavilion was crowded with girls all greeting one another gaily and comparing notes on their holidays. Miss Effie Travers was in charge of the play, and graded and directed the players in her usual capable manner. Mrs C. J. Treleaven organised the party with the help of the following girls: Misses Patricia Clowes, Janet Beattie, Nancy Williams, Betty Hatherley, Kathleen Buchanan, Mary Morten and Molly Heasley. Valuable assistance was given this committee by Mesdames Charles Buchana, T. T. Armstrong and A. E. Ackroyd. Miss Myra Armstrong and Miss Lois Manning won the prizes. The players were: Mesdames C. Pope, G. Ellis, T. R. Lorimer, Misses Kathleen Cuddon, Betty Hatherley, Betty Ackroyd, Margaret Talbot, Ruth Hamilton, Joan Buchanan, Betty Larcombe.
