ART TREASURE SALE.
£15,000 for £600,000 Worth of Articles. CHICAGO, January 17. Eighteen thousand people attended the famous auction sale, last week, of the art treasures and jewels of Mrs Edith Rockefeller M’Cormick, said to have been the richest woman in the world. Our average was about two cents to the dollar.” said the auctioneer today, in admitting that the sale was a huge failure. The realisation will not be 75,000 dollars (normally £15,000) for treasures reputed to have been valued at more than three million dollars (£600.000). To limit the attendance at the sale to those who meant to buy. the auctioneers charged £2 for admission, to be deducted from the first purchase.
