A university is an association of men for the purpose of study which confers degrees acknowledged as valid throughout Christendom. The word is from the Latin “ universalis,” meaning belonging to the whole, so that a university is a place of universal study. A college is an educational institution often associated with a university, and sometimes having the power to grant degrees.
