“HIKE” FOR A WAGER.
CAMBRIDGE WALKERS LOSE BET. None of the six Cambridge undergraduates who set out to walk to London and buck in 24 hours for a wager of £IOO to £2 accomplished the feat, but two came very near. Mr. G. N. Wilson, of Trinity i College, whip to the University Drag, got within five miles and then gave up as only a quarter of an hour was left of the 24. Mr. R. A. Mason, also of Trinity, sue-j climbed earlier through bad blisters. The other four had admitted defeat several hours before. j Mr. Wilson said that the first 13 miles, to Roys ton, was done in two hours, alternately running for 20 minutes ami walking for 10. “Mr. Mason and I stopped for coffee at Welwyn,” he proceeded. “and arrived at Barnet at 4.40 p.rn., having covered the first 50 miles in 10% hours. We started the return journev at (j. 10 p.m.. and the first stop was Welwyn. We left there at 9 p.m., and arrived at Stevenage at 10.45 p.m. There we had another bath, a meal, and about 20 minutes’ sleep. We were on the road again at 11.45 p.m., but by this time Mr. [Mason was having trouble with one of Ins legs. When I reached Hurston, at 5.15 p.m., I realised that 1 could not accomplish my task.”
