POPULAR PRESIDENT.
Cuba May Now Enjoy Peace. HAVANA, January 19. Cuba’s sixth President within five months, Carlos Mendietta, the thirty-three-year-old Nationalist leader, has assumed office with conditions holding fair promise that he will be able to reconcile all factions and bring about orderly government. lie will form a State council of seventy members, acting as a legislative body. He will retain the right of veto, but his veto may be overridden by a two-thirds vote of the legislature. Senor Mendietta’s election ended the general strike, that has been in existence for some days. He openly addressed citizens who were appealing for the liberation of the army officers concerned in the siege of the National Hotel several months ago. Cheers interrupted his references to “ everlasting peace for Cuba.”
