ATHLETICS.

Championship Meeting Opened Last Night. PRELIMINARY EVENTS. A brilliant victory scored by G. H. Watson, of the Old Boys’ Club, in the three mile event, was the outstanding performance at tne canteroury amateur athletic championsnip preliminary meeting held at Lancaster Barit lasc evening. Winning oy over 30U yarns, Watson registered the exceptionally smart time of lCmln 0 i>-ssee, the iastest recorded in Canterbury since the war. Had he been given stronger competition he might have clipped several seconds off his time. The pace in the early stages of the race was made by Cookson ana Ratcliffe, but after a mile and a half Watson was in charge. Hay, of New Brighton, tried to race him for part of the journey, but tired and dropped out of the picture. In the last half-mile Watson lapped nine of the ten runners remaining in the held of fourteen that had left the mark. He finished with an amazing burst of sp*ed over the last 100 yards, capturing the title won last year, but not defended this season by A. D. Kane, of Kaiapoi. The major championship programme will be held this afternoon, and basing calculations on performances witnessed in last night’s preliminaries, the meeting should surpass all previous standards. The track at Lancaster Park is in perfect order and the fields are stranger this year than they have ever been in the history of the province. Given fine weather to-day’s meeting cannot fail to provide contests more thrilling than Canterbury has previously known. The holder of the quarter-mile title, T. G. Broadway (Canterbury) ran in fine form in winning his heat in COsec last night, beating H. M’Caskey (Sumner) by six yards. Third place was filled by O. C. Harley, who won the title in 1931, recording 50 2-ssec. Broadway’s strongest rival for the title, D. P. Anderson (Varsity), won his heat in 50 3-6 sec, and had four yards to spare from G. P. Irving (Sumner), who beat A. Bullivant (Canterbury), the 1930 champion, in the last few strides for second place. In winning his heat in the 220yds hurdles championship, an event that is being held for thq first time this year, J. 3D. Nelligan (Canterbury) recorded 26 3-ssec, this time being 2-ssec inside the Canterbury standard. The All Black Rugby player, E. Holder, of Westport, was second, a yard behind the winner. G. B. Eathorne (Old Boys) won the second heat easily from C. S. Barrell (Sydenham) in standard time. The holder of the 220yds title, J. B. MacFarlane (Old Boys) won his heat in 22 4-ssec. Holder was again in second place in this race, and G. C. Gordon (Sydenham) was third. The time was 2-ssec inside the Canterbury standard. MacFarlane’s time was equalled by W. J. Fitzsimmons (Sydenham), who, in his heat, beat J. D. Carmichael (Varsity) and C. T. Roller (§umner). The race between MacFarlane and Fitzsimmons to-day should be one of the thrills of the meeting. , , . . The discus throwing championship was won by last year’s title-holder, F. T. J.
