HALF WAY.

Riccarton Horses Win 136 Races in Six Months. £22,016 WON IN STAKES. Half of the 1933-34 racing season in New Zealand has gone, and the second half was entered upon on Thursday. In the first six months of this racing year horses regularly trained at Riccarton have won 136 races. They have also gained second place on 118 occasions and third place 106 times. The aggregate value of the prize money won by Riccarton stables this season is £22,016 10s. The second quarter, comprising November, December and January was profitable to this training centre. During the three months, 'Riccarton representatives won 80 races, ran 74 seconds and 56 thirds and in prize money captutred £13,755 10s. In each of the last two seasons Riccarton stables just missed reaching the 200 mark in wins. This season should see the second century passed unless there is a very decided slump from now on. The 136 successes have been gained on twenty courses as follows: —Riccarton 35, Wingatui 15, Trentham 12, Geraldine 11, Ashburton 10, Hokitika 7, Omoto 7, Motukarara 6, Oamaru (including Kurow) 6, Rangiora 5, Ellerslie 4, Waikouaiti 4, Washdyke 3, Wyndham 3, Awapuni 2, Reefton 2, Wangajhui 1, Marton 1, Tauherenikau 1 and Invercargill 1. H. and A. Cutts, who headed the New Zealand as well as the Riccarton list last season, and who led this season until Boxing Day, are now second to Mrs J. Campbell, who is two wins ahead. S. Barr has passed T. H. Gillett to take third place. Others who showed improved figures at the end of the second quarter were F. D. Jones, H. Nurse, A. M’Aulay, C. Davey, F. Holmes and R. W. King. Mrs Campbell’s tally for half of this racing year compares strikingly with the 1932-33 record of her stable. That was 1 win, 2 seconds, 2 thirds and £l7O in stakes. A feature of the appended list is the twenty-two thirds run by Chokebore Lodge horses, in addition to fifteen wins and eleven seconds, while those trained by Gillett have had ten firsts and seventeen seconds, but no thirds. The figures to January 31, inclusive, are:—

ON THE TRACKS. Candidates for Dunedin Gallops. There was a fog early this morning at Riccarton, but it soon disappeared when the sun rose. It, however, left a good deal of moisture, and the plough was dead early. Most of the work was done on the No. 6 grass. For a pleasant change, the morning was calm. On the plough, High Rank took lmin 22sec in beating Wild Sky over six furlongs. They slowed up appreciably towards the end. Later, Motunau and Double Shot worked usefully on the plough. On the grass, Cleaner beat Red Dancer by a neck over seven furlongs in lmin 33sec. Star Raider and Elude ran six furlongs in lmin 16 4-ssec, the first three in 38 l-ssec. Grampian and Water Polo covered six furlongs in lmin 16 4-ssec. Custodian and Dollar Prince, going comfortably, completed six furlongs in lmin 17sec. Tunneller and Trumpet Blast ran five furlongs in lmin 3sec, the last half mile in 50 2-ssec. Silver Ring ran seven furlongs in lmin 30sec. He took 14sec over the first furlong, but still ran the first halfmile in 51sec. King March (A. Russell) and Southdown (A. H. Eastwood) were associated for six furlongs, which they ran in lmin 16 2-ssec. King March was half a length in front at the end, but it looked as if he could have increased the margin without much trouble. Strong Light and Silver Brier ran five furlongs in lmin 5 2-ssec. Great Star and Grand Review were let off easily. After breakfast, Doiran and Rational 11. ran six furlongs in lmin 17 l-ssec, finishing together. Croupier went away from the seven furlongs, and, after running a furlong in 14sec, was joined by Marcus Cicero at the six. They ran the six furlongs in lmin 15 l-ssec, finishing together. Don Jose and Fleeting Glance, separately, did strong pace. They schooled over hurdles well in company yesterday. Gaysome did the best six furlongs of the morning, registering lmin 13sec. The Bailiff beat Bowlands, with Importance well back, over six furlongs, run in lmin 16 3-ssec. Vintage, travelling easily, was in front of Concentrate when a mile had been run in lmin 44 2-ssec. Cup Bearer went half a mile in 52sec. Silver Sight beat Some Shamble over a mile in lmin 42sec. Courtyard joined in at the top.
