QUAKE ANNIVERSARY.
Three years ago to-day New Zealand was shocked by the horrors of the worst earthquake disaster in its history. At 10.58 a.m%on February 3, 1931, the towns of Napier and Hastings were shattered by a terrific upheaval of the earth’s surface. At Napier 144 people were killed and at Hastings the death roll numbered 100. Over 1000 people were injured, and many were permanently disabled. The loss of buildings and property amounted to some millions of pounds. There was also loss of life and extensive damage in many of the smaller towns in Hawke’s Bay.
