The Plantain Lily .
A Garden Corner.
THE PLANTAIN LILY, or Funkia ovata, is a Japanese bulbous perennial, which has claims to attention as a decorative plant for the border, or as a greenhouse pot plant. There are some half dozen species with green or variegated foliage, the latter being most effective. The flowers are either white or blue, and are borne on stems much like a Scilla. If the leaves were borne on longer stems, we might suggest a similarity to the Aspidistra, although its common name makes it comparable with the field plantation or ribgrass. The flowers have no particular beauty or charm, but in conjunctiori with its abundant foliage, the Funkia is well worth a place on the border and is indispensable in the greenhouse. T. D. LENNIE.
