CUSTOMS REVENUE.

Substantial Increase in Returns. Revenue from all sources collected at the office of the Customs Department in Christchurch last month showed an increase of £44,072 compared with January last year. The amount of net Customs revenue collected was £81,873, an increase of £11,742. Sales tax, which was not collected in January, 1933, amounted to £26,670 last month, and motor spirits tax aggregated £23,471, an increase of £4485. There was also an increase of £3lB in the beer duty collected. The following is a comparison of the figures for last month and for January last ye_ar:—

Auckland. Per P. ess Association. AUCKLAND, January 31. An increase of £63,260 is shown in the Customs duties collected at Auckland in January, compared with January, 1933. The receipts were £234,935 against £171,675 in the first month of last year. A substantial increase is shown, also, when the Customs receipts for the first ten months of the two financial years are compared. In the current financial year to date £1,956,683 has been collected, which is £316,851 greater than the amount of £1,639,832 collected in the corresponding period of 1932-33. An increase of £7783 is shown in the combined receipts of petrol duty and tyre tax, the total for last month being £53,205 compared with £45,422 in January, 1933. The sales tax last month totalled £52,280. The total since its inception in March of 1933 is £461,622. Wellington. WELLINGTON. January 31. The Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington continues to show an increase over the corresponding month of the previous vear, January being the fourth consecutive month to show this increase. The total collected last month was also by far the largest for the past two years. The following are details:

* Decrease. DUNEDIN, January 31. The Customs returns for the month ended to-day were £61,995, as against £57,099 for the corresponding period last year. The beer duty totalled £27,087 compared with £23,420 for January, 1933; motor tyre tax amounted tp £778, against £741 ; and the petrol tax to £15,523 compared with £16,630. The sales tax amounted to £23,982, the figures for last month being £19,604.
