COSTLY YEARLINGS

Plans for G. Price’s Purchases. (Special to the “Star.*’) W ELLINGTON, February 1. Five high-priced yearlings, bought at the National sales by Australian sportsmen last year, were left at Trentham to be broken in and put through their early work, and. so successful were the results that the same course has been followed this year by the Sydney racing men for whom the Randwick trainer, G. Price, .was acting in buying se-v v en of the highest-priced lots at the 4934 sales. These seven youngsters are now under the care of H. Telfotd, who has already started breaking them in, and they will not be sent across to Sydney till April. Among these juveniles is the Limond Imprudence bay*- colt who made top price of 850 gs at the sales. This threequarter brother to Davolo was bought by the former New Zealander, Air E. J. Watt. He is not a big colt, but it would be hard to fault his conformation, and his action in walking is very attractive. Mr Watt also owns another of the vearlings in the Gainscourt—Desert Gold brown filly, for whom he paid 325g5. This filly is a good colour, with a fine middle-piece and a well-set neck. She has her dam’s head. Interest will be taken in the progress of this youngster, not only because she is a daughter of Desert Gold, but also because of the success of Gainsborough blood in England. Veilmond’s Relatives. Mr E. Moss, owner of Veilmond, was the purchaser of two more members of the family in a Limond—Curtain bay colt and a Posterity—Veil bay colt, and obviously he is searching for another Veilmond. For the former, who is a shade on the small side, 350 gs was paid; and for the latter, who stands over plenty of ground and his a lot of white about him, the final bid was 500 gs. The Limond colt is a close relation, to Veilmond, as Curtain is a three-quarter sister to Veil, and the Posterity colt is a half-brother to Veilmond, being one of his sire's first crop. Mr J. S. Brunton, of Sydney, owns two of the remaining three yearlings, these being the Iliad—Quadrilateral chestnut colt for whom he paid 550gns, and the Night Raid—-Rosita brown colt, for whem he had to call the same price. Last year Mr Brunton bought Quadrilateral’s Paper Money filly, who has been racing successfully as Quarto, and he was apparently determined this year to obtain her Iliad colt, who is another fine-looking youngster brim full of vitality. Attractive Colt. The Rosita colt, who is a halfbrother to Beverage, may prove the better oSf the pair nevertheless, for he was one of the most attractive youngsters in the sale. Both have high figure recommendations, particularly the Rosita colt, which wotild indicate that Mr Brunton is an adherent to Bruce Lane’s theory. The last of the youngsters being broken in by Telford is the Limond— Anklet chestnut colt, who was the first lot offered last week and was obtained on behalf of Mr F. Aldritt, of Sydney, a new buyer at the sales, for 425gns. This colt is another of the Veilmond family, being, besides a brother to Pembroke and the ill-fated Garter Knight, a three-quarter relative in blood to Veilmond. These seven yearlings represent a good deal of money—£3sso in aggregate purchase price, and naturally a great amount of care is being taken with them. Telford hopes to have them all broken in during the next fortnight or so, and he will then take them down to the tracks, where they will do up to three-quarter pacing before leaving for their future homes.
