The Church of St Mary the Virgin, in the north of London, has a woman sexton, Mrs Walter Stutters. She was appointed when her husband retired thirty years ago after twenty years’ service, during which Mrs Stutters often acted as his deputy. The appointment is likely to be unique, as the Enabling Act states that all sextons must be able to perform their traditional duties. These include gravedigging and tolling the passing bell. In a letter to the “ Sydney Morning Herald” a woman who says she has been associated with amateur rowing for 47 years and still acts in an administrative capacity writes: “ Rowing on sliding seats is essentially a sport for men only, developing, as it does, every muscle of the human body, consequently it is £po violent for women, and I personally know of some sacl cases of motherhood. Rowing on fixed seats for pleasure does no harm—those muscles are not brought into play.”
