NEW YEAR PARTIES.

Fancy Dress Carnival at Hotel Federal. dancing and bridge. The Hotel Federal was again the scene of merry-making and revelry on New Year's Eve, when 130 guests assembled for dinner. The carnival spirit was greatly in evidence, each guest donning a quaint paper hat. A fancy dress carnival, starting with a grand march and parade, was held later. The costumes were judged by Dr and Mrs Caldinius, Mrs Baird and Mr Hunt. The prize-winners were: Miss Freda MT’urdv (Out of a Picture) 1, Miss D. Mann (Costume Period, Henry VIII.) 2; Master Stanley Oswin (Persian Prince) 1, Mr Clifton Lewis (Toreador) 2. Two hundred and fifty people were present in the lounge and ballroom, and while some played bridge others danced. Those ill fancy costumes were: Mesdames L. R. Jevons (Tom Mix), Curtis (Sheik). Dance at Ferry Road Hall. In the darkness of New Year’s Eve, hundreds of eager dancers waited outside the Ferry Road Hall for the beginning of the New Year ball. Punctually at midnight the hall became a blaze of light, the doors were opened and Bryson’s Band played “ Auld Lang Syne.” The programme consisted solely of old-time dances, the valetta, schottische, mazurka, Alberts, lancers, all the old favourites being included. Both young and old danced these numbers with evident enjoyment. Special decorations took the form of gaily coloured streamers and festoons, while above the stage a large model aeroplane. “ The Faith in 1934,” was suspended. Mr Reg Stillwell, the proprietor of this popular dance hall, extended good wishes for the new year to all present. Daylight was streaming in through the skylights before the last waltz was finished. A special hot breakfast was served at 5.30 o’clock.
