AUCKLAND WIN.

Otago’s Second Innings Realises 211. (Special to the " Star.”) AUCKLAND, January 3. Auckland defeated Otago in the Plunket Shield match by 169 runs. Needing 330 to win, Otago commenced their second innings yesterday, and at stumps had lost five wickets for 136. To-day Otago were all out for 211. This morning, by stubborn batting. Otago added 75 runs to their overnight score, and Uttley again topped the score with 54. At first the scoring was extremely slow, half an hour producing 14 runs in fourteen overs, but after Uttley had skied a ball to Garrard, and Hawkesworth had been tempted to force Vivian with the result that he returned the bowler a catch, Cox and Chettleburgh attacked the bowling. However, Ccx was soon bowled and Dunning was clean bowled by Bush. Jolly saw’ Chettleburgh bring 200 up with a boundary off Garrard and three off Bush, but the end came when Jollv was caught at the wickets off Bush. AUCKLAND. First innings 263 Second Innings. J. E. Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 2. e *i’ and Vivian took no risks when they resumed Auckland’s second innings : with the score at 135 for two wickets. I Vivian was unusually restrained, but reached 50 in ninety-eight minutes. He then lost Weir, who went for a hit off Dunning, mistimed the ball and was caught by Moloney at mid-on. 174—3 33. Two runs later Vivian also tried Lo force the pace and was caught by Cox at deep extra cover off Badcock. 176 4—53.

Cleave and Postles played a waiting game against Badcock and Dunning. Moloney came on. and Cleave faced him confidently. However, Badcock had packed the covers and Cleave could niOt get his shots through the field. The second hundred appeared in 22 8 minutes, and Dunning and Elmes bowled with a new ball. The latter, in his second over, clean bowled Cleave. 202

Wallace, with Postles, provided half an hour of delightful cricket. The Parnell colt batted stylishly, and his driving was crisp and powerful. Chettleburgh, used for the first time, was played easily, but Wallace went forward t.o one which pitched a trifle short and returned an easy catch to the bowler. 249 —6—2 6. Postles and Bush took the score to 256 at lunch. Slow Scoring.

Dunning and Badcock bowled after the interval, and In the former’s first over Bush was caught behind the wicket. 267—7—11. A period of slow scoring followed, Postles taking no chances, and Garrard was hardly as confident as he was in the first innings. Several bowling changes were tried, and eventually the use of Elmes again succeeded, Postles going lbw after 125 minutes at the wicket. 291—8—46. Garrard and Matheson brought 300 up for 333 minutes, but the latter was clean bowled in attempting a big hit off Elmes. 303—9—1. Edmonds and Garrard again shaped well for the last wicket, with the former taking most of the bowling. Moloney had gone off the field before lunch, and Badcock had to use Chettleburgh as his slow howler. Tt was the latter who ended the innings. Edmonds chasing a ball and being easily stumped. 320—10—16. The innings lasted 374 minutes. A Bad Start. Facing a deficit of 380 runs, Otago’s opening batsmen, Knight and Cavanagh. started confidently. The former was unfortunate to play Matheson on early. Cavanagh and Moloney carried on confidently, taking the score from 13 to 67 before Cavanagh was well caught behind the wickets. Almost immediately Garrard completely heat Moloney. 69 3—22. Elmes reached the twenties nicely, but Badcock was unlucky to get a hall from Bush which failed to rise. After the dismissal of five batsmen the score was 107, and Otago’s position was very bad. Uttley and Hawkesworth were associated in a slow scoring partnership. and at stumps had 32 and 3 respectively. Hawke Cup Match. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 2. Taranaki (the holders), in reply to Poverty Bay’s score of 214 in the'first innings of the Hawke Cup challenge match, compiled 496 runs, including an excellent 157 by Nasmith, 81 by T.
