What Happened in 1844.

Dear Sir,—I beg space to reply to your correspondent, N. M. Bell, regarding the subject of Christianity. Mr Bell desires to know how the saving teaching of Christ can be made the modern message, as it was the initial message of the Christian Church, and saying that if the Christian Church cannot utter it there is urgent necessity for a new Church which will do so. The teaching of Christ was based on the law of God (The Ten Commandments law) which, like the laws of nature, never changes. Speaking in the Sermon on the Mount He said “ I am not come to destroy (the laws) but to fulfill, for verily I say unto you till heaven and earth pass one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." Now that law, or set of laws, has been in existence from creation. Christ came according to God’s plan of redemption and He came on time (over 300 references in the Old Testament, I believe, point to the promised Messiah), but in spite of all that the religious leaders of that time were quite ignorant of the great event, so much so that Luke 2, 7 tells us He was laid in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn, and there was no room for Him in their hearts, either, else they would not have crucified Him. Just as they failed to recognise the prophecies in the Old Testament, which pointed to His first advent as a Redeemer, so do they fail to . recognise the Old and New Testament prophecies which unerringly point to His second coming. The truth is that we are nearing the great crisis of the ages when the age-long warfare between Christ and Satan will be ended and the mystery of God will be finished. If Mr Bell or anyone eke desires to know whether their religious leaders are looking fer that great event so vividly depicted in both Old and New Testaments, let him ask, and note carefully the answer. There is no urgent necessity of a new Church to utter the message, the Seventh Day Adventist Church has been on the job since 1844. —I am, etc., F. SLADE This letter has been shortened.—Ed. “ Star.”
