Combined Church Service. On Sunday last, December 24, a combined Presbyterian and Methodist service was held in the Methodist C* 'l\ Granity. The choir rendered Christmas anthems and Mr A. Roskvist played a trombone solo. The service was conducted by the Rev IT. F. Steffans and the Rev R. Coombridge before a large congregation. St Peter’s Sunday School. The annual prize-giving of the St Peter's Sunday School was held in the Granity Church Ilall during the week-end. The children contributed songs and recitations in finished style, and the items were much enjoyed. Miss Leggy Smith sang “ Flow Gently, Sweet Afton”; Miss Elsie Webster, "Just a Little Street”; Misses Audrey Evans, Nona Chew, Mavis Borlase, Ruth Collins, Phyllis Webster, Joan Webster, Freda Webster, and Masters W. Rennie, Jack and Frank Evans also assisted. The vicar, the Rev L. K. Collins, before requesting Mr Carmine to distribute the prizes, si ike in terms of praise of the devoted work of the Sunday school superintendent, Mrs E. Lecher, and her staff of helpers. M’Kinlay (chairman) and Mr W. Watson (secretary), of the School Committee, were present at a function held in Millerton School. Mr M’Bean, headmaster, was congratulated by the chairman in not having one failure out ol all the pupils he prepared for the proficiency examination. This was something to be proud of. J. M’Bean a ud J. Orman were each presented with a dux medal, whilst Jim Nichol was congratulated on not missing a day from school during the past eight and a half years. Mines Close Down. All the mines in the Buller district closed down on Friday for the usual annual holidays. Millerton pit horses were taken to Fairdown for a well deserved spell in the open.
