TWO POPULAR STARS.

Warner Baxter and Janet Gaynor in “ Paddy.” In “ Paddy, The Xext Best Thing.” which heads the current programme at the Regent Theatre, Janet Gaynor is given a chance to show that she can play the pari of a quick-tempered and unruly yet lovable Irish tomboy to perfection. The favourite of millions of picturegoers, Janet Gaynor earns fresh honours by her performance in this charming talking screen version of Gertrude Page's popular novel. In several productions Janet Gaynor’s humour has been of the whimsical type, but there is a startling difference in “ Paddy. The Xext Best Thing.” She captures the Irish atmosphere of the story most convincingly by her witty remarks and reckless behaviour. A new Janet Gaynor is seen in the picture, and it is said that some of her actions are an index to her true character off the screen. She rides horses, sells pigs in an Irish market, works in a chemist's shop, and sails a small boat round the coast. Warner Baxter, who appeared opposite Janet Gaynor in "Daddy Long Legs,” is one of the best leading men the petite redheaded star has had. In this play his stalwart romantic qualities provide an ideal foil for her appealing air. Baxter proves, too. that he has a gift for quiet humour, and this helps to make the picture really enjoyable. The acting honours are stolen, however, by Walter Connolly, as the witty yet lovable old rogue. Major Adair. Tuneful Irish airs played by Rene Ric-h. a talented violinist, who has just returned to Christchurch, make a pleasing introduction to the film. The supporting programme is excellent.
