MINING.
Bell Hill Sluicing Co.’s Return. The Bell Hill Sluicing Company reports that it has secured 48£oz of gold , for 125 hours’ sluicing during the past month. King Solomon Mine, Per Press Association. GORE, December 26. The King Solomon mine report for the week gives the wash-up as 170 oz 16dwt. Kahakipawa Goldfields, Ltd. The Mahakipawa mine manager reported for the period December 1 to 22 as follows: South End—The south-east drive has advanced 36ft, making a total of 111 ft from No. 12 crosscut. The wash has been stoney and of a favourable blue colour resting on a gradually rising bottom rock. For the first 20ft the bottom rock was hard and smooth and samples taken were but fair grade. On changing to a soft flakey bottom for the last 16ft the samples have been consistently good grade. Blocking out has been continued east and west of No. 1 north drive in fair grade wash and in places showing quite good prospects. North End—Further blocking strips were run out west alongside No. 1 west crosscut, the wash for the first 24ft being of good grade. An increased flow of water from this point necessitated suspending work at this end of the mine until a larger-sized pump was procured and installed. We appear to have tapped the flow of water which was running direct into the shaft at a higher level. Return—During the period 354 cubic yards of wash were sent to the sluice box, which returned 720 z melted gold. Work underground ceased on December 22 for the fortnight’s holiday at Christmas. Waitahu. The secretaries of the Waitahu Gold Mining Company. Ltd., report that work has been closed down on the claim until Wednesday. January 3. Prior to clos'ng down the boxes were lifted and a progress return of 16Joz was recovered from the boxes as a result of sluicing operations on the top material.
