SPORTS MEETINGS.

A Good Day at Oxford Domain. CYCLING AND RUNNING. The annual gathering- of the Oxford Sports Association was held in the Oxford Domain yesterday. The weather was perfect and the running and cycling tracks were in good order, the cycling track being exceptionally fast. A fairly strong north-east wind assisted the runners and times in the sprint events were fast. There was a large attendance of spectators. The Oxford Brass Band was in attendance and played selections at intervals during the day. The presence of W. J. Ramberton, champion cyclist, and C. Pablecheque (Kaikoura) and H. Garlick (Christchurch), champion axemen, added interest to the meeting. Lamberton was 1 in good form, winning the one mile Can- : terbury cycling championship and was placed in the three miles handicap. The . big running race, the 100yds Oxford Handicap, was won by practically a new runner, W'. .T. Bellamy, of Christchurch. ; The second heat of the two miles wheelrace was run off in slow time and the referee ordered a re-run and as this did not comply with the time limit, the heat . was declared “no race.” As usual the chopping events attracted a great deal of attention, great ex- ■ hibitions of chopping being given by , the backmarkers, C. Pablecheque and H. ; Garlick. In one of the chopping events O. Le Compte mishit his block and received a severe cut. in his leg, necessi--1 tating his removal to the hospital. ; There were several spills in the cycling , events but no serious accident occurred. Th© sports, were well conducted, the ' arrangements being in charge of Mr J. . Ivory, president, and Mr R. J. Sharpe, secretary. There was a large attendance at Osborne Park, Doyleston, yesterday, when the annual sports conducted by the Doyleston Athletic Club were held. Competition was keen throughout the day, though a stiff easterly wind militated against fast times. There was a fair attendance from Christchurch, and the day proved an enjoyable one. A number of side-shows added to the gaiety of the meeting, and with the many close finishes witnessed the officials must have been well pleased with the day’s programme. The entries were up on those of last year. For the first time at the meeting, the Doyleston Women’s Institute conducted a luncheon booth, and this was well patronised.
