WEALTHY FARMER SHOT.
End of Attempt to Stop “ Spooners.” CLEVELAND, December 12. The honking of horns of cars conveying “ petting parties ” near the house of Carl Metling, a wealthy retired farmer, was the initial cause of his being slain last nght. Britton Young, a University student of Cleveland, was “ spooning ” with his girl friend in her car last night, with the lights extinguished. An intruder arrived, pulled open the door, dragged the girl roughly from the seat, and proceeded to beat her. Young fought off the assailant (Metling), who, however, was too strong. Young then drew his revolver. In further fighting Young shot and killed Metling. Metling had attended a Bible class early in the evening and told his friends that he intended to try to break up the “ petting parties ” in motor-cars because of the annoyance from honking.
