BIG CITY BUILDING.
Work to Begin on Beath’s New Premises. TWO SHIFTS TO BE EMPLOYED. Preparations have already been made for work to begin on January 2 on the erection of Beath’s new building at the corner of Cashel Street and Colombo Street. Messrs P. Graham and Sons are the contractors, and their huge crane is now in position in readiness for the job of demolishing the existing wooden building, which for a long period was used for the A 1 Hotel. It has not yet been definitely decided how many storeys wili be built at first, but the new building will form part of a uniform block which eventually will cover the whole of the ground area occupied by Beath’s. The excavations will be about seventeen feet deep. Arrangements have been made to work two shifts during the erection of the building. By an arrangement with the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners the men will work forty hours a week and will receive the equivalent of forty-four hours’ pay.
