GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL.

Prize-giving Ceremony at “ Acland.” ADDRESS BY DEPUTY-CHAIRMAN The annual prize-giving ceremony of the Christchurch Girls’ High School j was held in the grounds of the girls’ hostel, “ Acland ’’ this morning. Mrs |C . T. Aschman, wife of the chairman of ’ the Canterbury College Board of Governors, presented the prizes. In the absence of the chairman, Mr A. E. Flower, the deputy-chairman of the board, addressed the pupils. Other members of the board who attended the ceremony were Misses E. A. Chaplin and K. M. Gresson, and Messrs J. If. E. Schroder, J. G. Poison, R. Hepburn and L. B. Wood. After the presentation of prizes the visitors witnessed a drill display arranged by the sports mistress, Miss N. Forsyth. Mr Flower said that the school had had a good year. He was impressed with the variety of interests of the pupils. I-Je had inspected the display of work at the school yesterday, and considered it was second to none. The members of the staff deserved the greatest credit for the wonderful results they had obtained. Mr Flower said that he hoped the parents would appreciate the facilities at the school, and not worry too much about examinations. One of the finest things a girl could do was to learn to become helpful in the home. With the opportunities provided for learning at the school, not one girl need leave without being thoroughly qualified for any task. - The report of the headmistress (Miss P. M. P. Clark) stated that there were 487 pupils on the roll. Tn both work and sport the school had had a successful year. Two pupils had gained University scholarships and six girls who had sat for University bursaries had been successful. Forty-five girls had passed the University entrance examination in 1932. 109 passed the intermediate examination, while 35 higher leaving certificates had been gained.
