Completion of Haast Pass Road Urged. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, December 8. - , Th ® Quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held here toIt was decided to urge the Unemployment Board and the Public Works i nv e s ti&ate immediately With a view to proceeding with the completion of thte Haast Pass Road as a major unmployment undertaking Referring to the annual drivers’ license Mr D. J. Wesney (Southland) said that certain countries issued a license, attached to which were recovering six ytears. The Southland Association thought such a license would effect a considerable saving in work and cost, and it was recommended that the executive should discuss the matter further with the authorities. The recommendation was adopted. De-rating Question. A resolution was passed requesting that the Government life asked to give an assurance that if any commission is set up dealing with the question of derating then motorists should be given representation on such commission. It was maintained that motorists, as a section, were carrying more than their burden of the rural reading problem and that motor taxation should not be diverted from road construction and maintenance and other purposes. The conference approved on broad principled of the Canterbury Association’s frete road service scheme, and it was resolved that the constituent associations be asked to consider it fully in the meantime and report at next meeting.
