Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and Professor Speight were among the arrivals from Wellington this morning. Messrs R. 11. Hudson and P. G Greenwood arrived from the north this morning. Guests at the Royal Hotel include Messrs L. M. Morton (Queenstown) and H. Kitchingham (Greymouth). Dr R. Campbell Begg (Wellington), leader of the New Zealand Legion, arrived from the north this morning and is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs Bruno Beyer (Berlin), W. Williamson (Ashburton), P. Dunlop (Dunedin). G. 11. Mason, H. Fletcher and C. J. Pugsley (Wellington). Guests at the Clarendon Hotel include Messrs A. Gavey, P. W. Robinson, G. Roberts. J. A. Parker (Wellington), L. W. Tattersfield and H. P. Richmond (Auckland). Messrs J. F. N. Stevenson (Wellington), G. F. Newman (London), L. B. Bolton-Moss (Sydney) and R. G. Armitage (Auckland) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Motions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Messrs S. Manning and W. M. Hamilton, two members of the chamber, were passed at the meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr R. L. Grant, general manager for British Empire Films, Ltd. (N.Z.), and personal representative in New Zealand for British International Pictures, Elstree. is visiting Christchurch for the opening of “ The Squatter’s Daughter ” at the Plaza. The council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last evening decided to send a letter to Mr C. P. Agar, expressing sympathy with him in his illness and its good wishes that he will make a complete and speedy recovery. Mr R. B. Forsyth, who has been transferred from the Christchurch to the Wellington branch of M’Whannell and Spanier, left last night for Wellington. lie has been succeeded in Christchurch by Mr C. Spring, of Wellington. Mr G. R. Park, of Timaru, who has been bailiff and maintenance officer of the Timaru Magistrate’s Court lor four and a half years, has been notified of his promotion to the position cf assistant bailiff of the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch. Mr Park will take up his ngw position early in the New Year. Mr W. P. Spencer, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, was asked yesterday by representatives of a number of school committees to be a candidate for the vacant seat on the Boaxd of Governors of Canterbury College and consented to the request. Mr Spencer has been chairman of the Belfast School Committee for twenty-three years and a member of that body for thirty-eight years. During the visit to Christchurch next week of Sir George Julius, chairman of the Australian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, he will be the guest of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at its quarterly meeting and luncheon to be held at Ballantyne’s on Wednesday. In making this announcement last evening at the meeting of the council of the chamber, the president (Mr A. F. Wright) said that Sir George had consented to address the gathering on matters concerning which he had made an intensive studv. Sir George, who ; s a son of Archbishop Julius, is an old Canterbury boy.
