LIQUOR SMUGGLERS.

500 Arrests Ordered in Big Coup. OTTAWA, December 1. Canada is launching its greatest drive against liquor smugglers. No fewer than 500 arrests have been ordered of French-Canadians and Eng-lish-speaking rum-runners operating along the Lower St Lawrence River. One unnamed Scottish distiller, who furnished bulk supplies for a very extensive traffic, will also be prosecuted. Liquor was brought from Glasgow to # the French islands of St Pierre and Miquelon, in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Part of the liquor was bootlegged into Boston and New York territory, and huge shipments were also made to Quebec and Montreal for sale at reduced prices against the Government stores of liquors. The investigation was the largest assignment ever undertaken by the Canadian Mounted Police, who expect also to gather a large amount of unpaid income tax, in addition to sending scores of ringleaders to prison. In one recent seizure the entire list of those involved was captured.
