ARREST MADE.

Payments From Maori Relief Fund. COMPANY MANAGER CHARGED Association. GISBORNE, December S. This morning Detective M'Leod arrested Charles Goldsmith, manager of the Waiapu Farmers' Co-operative Company, and in making application for a remand the detective stated that protracted inquiries were entailed. The charge preferred against Goldsmith was that “on or about June 6, 1933. at Tikitiki, with intent to defraud, he obtained from H. J. Fletcher, postmaster at Tikitiki, the sum of £BO, the property of the New Zealand Government Maori Unemployment Relief Fund, by means of a certain false pretence, namely, by falsely representing that one, Wi Matahiki, had been employed on certain work under the Maori Unemployment Relief Fund." The accused appeared before the Court at Port Awanui this morning and was remanded until January 17. The remand was granted on the detective’s application and with the consent of the accused. In making the application Detective M'Leod stated that considerable inquiries had yet to be made, necessitating the remand of the accused, who had promised to afford every assistance in the inquiries. An application was made for bail and Detective M’Leod asked that bail should be fixed in a substantial amount as many hundreds of pounds were involved. Bail was allowed in the sum of £SOO in accused’s recognisance, together with one surety of an equal amount.
