SOUTH WITH BYRD.
New Zealanders Enrol in Expedition, Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 7. Since the Jacob Ruppert arrived in Wellington seven New Zealanders have joined Rear-Admiral Byrd’s expedition to Antarctica in various capacities, several as winchmen. Three more experienced seamen will be engaged to-morrow. Their qualifications must include a knowledge of the seas in the south-polar regions, and, if possible, experience on the ice. Well over 100 applications have been received from men and youths to join the expedition. According to the latest advice, the Jacob Ruppert may leave on Sunday afternoon but she may be delayed for the American mail, which is due by the Maunganui on Monday morning from San Francisco. If this is not done no rr.ai] will be received by the expedition until the Bear of Oakland reaches the Bay of Whales.
