SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF.

Sports and Exhibition of Work. ALL DAY CELEBRATIONS. The break-up ceremony for the pupils of the Sumner School for the Deaf was held yesterday. A long programme of sports and competitions took up the greater part of the day, alter which the staff and pupils sat down to the special Christmas tea. Keen interest and enthusiasm was in evidence throughout the day. In the evening Father Christmas made his appearance over the high balcony of the dining hall and the presentation of the prizes and Christmas gifts was then proceeded with. During the afternoon sports, afternoon tea was served by .the matron, Miss Leary, and her house staff. Although in past years samples of hand work done by the boys have been exhibited on the annual sports day, it was not till this year that samples of work done by the girls were on view. Although what was shown was a sample of the ordinary' school effort, it was of a high order and created a favourable impression on all who looked at it. The girls’ work included some excellent embroidery, including forty beautifully finished aprons. There were also summer frocks, plain sewing, beautiful basket work and attractive fancy work, as well as knitting. The boys contributed a splendid display of wood work, which included an inlaid cabinet, a tool chest, numbers of racks, tea trays, folding chairs, a tea waggon, and numerous other articles showing splendid workmanship. The exhibition of work done by the juniors included raffia work, papier mache work, coloured baked clay modelling, and wool weaving. Those present were:—Dr It. F. and Mrs Rakewell, Mr and Mrs H. M.
