Swanston, who was in receipt of a start of 45sec, rode a great race to establish fastest time. J. Armstrong, who won the New Brighton novice race, also secured fastest time. Although Armstrong is competing in novice races, his riding experience extends over several years. It should not be long before he is competing and wmning in # jopen company. A Richards, who filled second place, has shown consistent form in the New Brighton races. He found his more experienced co-marker, Armstrong, too good for him in the final sprint. Richards is a very promising ridgr. W. Moses, third place, is also a young performer who has been brought out by competing in the novice events. He is keen, and should develop into a good rider. H. Annett, who finished fourth and gained the prize for fastest time unplaced. is keeping up the reputation of his brother, who recently won the Waimate to Christchurch race. Those who attended the Christchurch Club’s social run last week-end thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The cycling track on which the races were decided was very rough, but nevertheless some good contests were witnessed. Bert Porter, who has recently taken up the sport, showed that he has mastered the points of track racing. He gave two fine performances in winning the four and six laps handicaps. K. Shanks, another novice rider, has also adapted himself to track racing, ant? rode with great dash. He should develop into a useful rider. One of the surprises of the day was the defeat, of W. .T. Hamberton by E. A. M Kaskell. The latter put in a useful sprint to beat Eaangertoji. Under the circumstances his ride last Wednesday was a meritorious one. Before reach- | struggled gamely on against a head wind. While he was indisposed ho * drank water and did not eat anything. Fleming gamely tackled the long pulls j of Kilmog and Mount Cargill, doing ten

miles an hour riding uphill. The roads for a third of the distance were loose and the going was heavy, but sheer determination pulled him through. His mentor, Phil O’Shea, who accompanied him in a car, tried to persaude Fleming to give up just out of Timaru, but he would not give in, having made up bis mind to finish the course. To beat the record by 28min was a good performance and it is not likely to be eclipsed for a long time. It is on the cards that attempts will be made to create and break further records in the near future. Fleming’s time for the various distances were:—Dunsandel (25 miles), 3. hr 18min 15sec; Rakaia (36 miles), llir 54min 53see; Ashburton (51 miles), 2b r 49min 50sec; Arundel <BO miles), 4hr lomin; Geraldine (90 miles), 4 hr 50min lOsee; Timaru (112 miles), 6hr Bmin; Makikihi (131 miles), 7hr 42inin; Oamaru (166 miles), 9hr 45min; Palmerston (203 miles), 12hr 8 rain 4 osec; Dunedin (23S miles), 14hr 25min.
