MOSQUE ENDANGERED.
Outbreak of Fire Destroys Part of Constantinople. United Press Assn.— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. CONSTANTINOPLE, December 4 The most extensive fire in the city’s recent history, after gutting the law courts and destroying their archives, was prevented by a strong gale from reaching the mosque of St Sophia. The flames reached a point only ten yards distant. The mosque’s early Christian gold mosaics were only recently restored. The mosque of the Sultan Ahmed was also threatened. Soldiers escorted the inmates of an adjacent prison to safer custody.
