RELIEF OF DISTRESS.
Pound Scheme Collection in Riccarton. A meeting of the Riccarton Borough Relief Committee was held on Saturdsv evening, the Mayor, Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., presiding*. Mr Kyle thanked all members of the committee for their cooperation in again ministering relief to the needy of the borough. The work this year was more strenuous than last year, the response from lion was not quite so good as last year, ditions, the committee considered the tee thanked all residents and firms who contributed cash donations or goods to help the committee in its work of relieving distress in the borough. The secretary gave a detailed statement of the assistance received from residents, and the Central Relief Committee; and also the assistance given to cases of distress. It was decided to hold a Pound Scheme collection during the week commencing December IS for the purpose of providing a parcel of Christinas cheer for the needy families residing in the borough. It was decided not to hold a children’s Christmas party this year, but to concentrate on a Christmas cheer parcel for the parents. However, an appeal is being made for gifts of toys which will he distributed in the parcel for the parents. Gifts of toys will be gratefully received by the Revs J. A. Allan. R. de Lambert and H. Ryan, and the Rev Father T. Hanralian. The relief will be distributed from the depot at the Riccarton Town Hall between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturday, December 23.
