STEADY EXPANSION

Building Trade Improving in Christchurch.

The value of building construction work authorised by the City Council last month was approximately half as much again as that of November last

year. Last month, fifty-nine permits were issued for work of an aggregate value of £19,848, compared with fifty. four permits and a value of £13,116 in November last year. AlthOugh the initial big increase due to the opera—tion of the building subsidy granted by the Unemployment Board is over, there are indicatiOns that the building trade has reached and is maintaining a higher degree of prosperity than was the case last year. ‘ In the period of eight months from: the beginning of April this year, 418 permits were issued for work of a. value ‘ of £131,923, compared with 373 permits and £87.01? value in the corresponding period last year, an increase of fortyfive permits and £44,906 for the period. The increase has been greatest in the Central and St Albans areas. The comparative figures are as follows: ' November, 1933. ___ _ __ Value.
