SEQUEL TO DISASTER.
Compensation Claims Total £4OOO. Fer Press Association. WAIHI, November 29. Nine of thirteen men who were injured when a cage at No. 2 shaft, in which they were being lowered to work in the Waihi mine on July 26, broke away and fell more than a thousand feet, claimed in special and general damages more than £4OOO from the Waihi Gold Mining Company in the Waihi Warden’s Court to-day. The case was heard by Mr F. W. Platts., Warden, and five assessors. Mr P. J. O’Regan, who appeared for the plaintiffs, in the course of his address suggested to the Court that the men were entitled to consideration for nervous strain, apart from bodily injuries. Mr IT. P. Richmond, for the defendant company, admitted liability for damages, but asked the Court not to be swayed by sentment in assessing the damage. The accident had been a spectacular one, but the Court should not be influenced by that fact. The case is proceeding.
