ONE MONTH’S GAOL.
Paper Thief Was Caught in Act. Through the watchfulness of a “ Christchurch Times ” newspaper runner, a paper thief was chased and laid by the heels early on the morning of November 17. A sequel was the appearance in the Magistrate’s Court this morning of Albert Bailey, of Sandyford Street, Sydenham, who was sentenced to one month’s goal on a charge of» stealing a neNvspaper, valued at 2d, the property of Eli James Price. Senior-Sergeant Fox said that at 5.15 a.m. on November 17, a newspaper runner employed by the “ Times,” named C. E. Hunsley, saw accused in Carlisle Street, Sydenham. Mr Hunsley decided to watch Bailey, as he was going into several houses, and his actions seemed suspicious. Mr Hunsley saw Bailey pick up a paper, and gave chase. Accused ran across a section and climbed over a fence, but his pursuer caught him. “ Thefts of this kind, although they involve a small amount, are particularly mean,” added the senior-sergeant. “ Then again, the thefts cause great complications between the runners and their customers.”
