MACHADO IN CANADA.
Embarrassing Visitor is Asked to Leave. OTTAWA, November 15. On the invitation of the Canadian Government, General Machado, the deposed President of Cuba, has left Canada, after a sojourn of two months. The former President conducted himself quietly enough, but his presence has been embarrassing from the standpoint of Canada’s trade with Cuba. At present he is visiting Poughkeepsie, New York State, but probably he will leave soon for Europe. Undoubtedly he has been encouraging the idea that he might attempt a coup d’etat in Havana, but the situation is so serious, and his fears that his relatives and friends there are in danger of imprisonment and torture are so profound, that he has decided to move away permanently.
The Machado regime in Cuba was overthrown with much bloodshed and the President barely escaped with his life. He flew to the Bahamas and then went to Canada. Threats were made by the revolutionaries to send a gang to assassinate him.
