TRAMS V. TROLLEY BUSES.

Mr Livingstone Defends His Attitude. “ A number of people have asked me to contest this seat because they consider that I am better fitted to represent them on the Tramway Board than is the member sitting at the moment," said Mr H. G. Livingstone, a candidate for the Tramway Board, when addressing a well-attended meeting at Church Corner, Riccarton, las£ evening. Prior to his Riccarton meeting Mr Livingstone addressed about forty electors at Hornby, where he was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. He was given a similar vote at his second meeting. Mr Livingstone said that Mr M’Lachlan, at his Fendalton meeting and in a letter to a newspaper, had disclosed that it was the intention of the Tramway Board, when the rails to Riccarton were worn out, to replace the present tram service with a trolley bus service. No other interpretation, he said, could be placed on what Mr M’Lachlan had stated. A section had been purchased by the board at the intersection of Riccarton Road and Clyde Road »to provide a turning loop for trolley buses. Mr Livingstone said that the tram rails ensured a definite service, and if they were done away with the result would be a depreciation in the value of Riccarton properties. There would be no assured passenger transport service. He strongly objected to trolley buses in Christchurch. To do away with the tram rails would mean a retrogression of thirty or forty years.
