ASHBURTON NEWS.
More Optimistic Tone Among Farmers. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, November 28. The rise in the prices of wool at the Auckland sale yesterday was the chief topic of conversation amongst farmers at the Ashburton stock sale to-day. An advance on last year’s values was confidently expected, but it was not anticipated that such a substantial increase would take place. Naturally, there is a feeling of great satisfaction and sheep farmers to-day were in a more cheerful mood than has been the case since the downward trend in prices commenced in the 1928-29 season. A more optimistic tone also prevails amongst local merchants who feel confident that the rise in values will be maintained. Pleased as they are at the improved turn in events, many who were spoken to to-day, however, seemed, a little apprehensive as to the cause of the sudden sharp rise in wool values and expressed the opinion that there was something more behind the scenes than a return to prosperity. St John Ambulance. Mr E. B. Gilbert, officer-in-charge of the Cadet Ambulance Division, Christchurch, met officers of the Ashburton sub-centre of the St John Ambulance Association yesterday with the object of discussing the formation of a division in Ashburton. A further visit will be made later, when he will meet district and corps officers, parents and boys to explain the work of the association. Band and Golf Club Carnival. Arrangements are well in hand for the carnival to be held by the Ashburton Golf Club and Ashburton Silver Band on the golf links on the evenings of Thursday, November 30, Fri day, December 1, and Saturday afternoon and evening.
