Mr R. D. H. Swindley (Oamaru) is a guest at the United Service Hotel. Mr R. A. Brunt (Auckland) is staying at the Royal Hotel. Mr A. M. Satterthwaite, of Christchurch, returned yesterday from a business visit to Australia. He has been away about a month. Mr P. C. Webb, M.P., left Christchurch last evening for Wellington. He is expected to take his seat in Parliament as the representative of the Buller electorate this week. Guests at the New City Hotel include:—Messrs G. Carden and W. Retter (Auckland), R. L. MacLachlan (Wellington), B. Sturmer (Dunedin) and S. H. Tucker (Invercargill). Bishop Brodie was a passenger for the north last night. He was accompanied by Bishop Whyte, of Dunedin, j who arrived from the south yesterday by the express. At a meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association Management Committee last evening Mr E. E. Luttrell was appointed manager of the Canterbury team for its North Island tour this season. Mr A. J. M’Eldowney, general secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association, is at present absent on holiday. He will be away for about a month and in his absence Mr C. G. Pegg is acting general secretary. The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr J. S. Neville) left last night for Wellington to give evidence before the Local Bills Committee of the House on the Municipal Corporations Bill. The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), who is in Wellington, also will give evidence on the Bill. Mr L. Gower, of the staff of the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, has been transferred to Hokitika and will leave to-morrow to take up his new duties. To-day, he was met by members of the staff, and Mr 11. A. Young, S.M., made a presentation. Mr If. Odell has been nominated by the Wharenui School Committee as a candidate to fill the vacancy on the Canterbury College Board of Governors caused by the death of Mr W. M. Hamilton. Mr Odell has been for some years an active member of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, and was for four years its secretary. He served for several terms on the Wharenui School Committee, Riccarton. Mr F. D. Kesteven, who has been president of the Christchurch Regatta Club for over ten years, has decided not to accept office in any capacity until his health improves. In advising the club to this effect last night he said that his interest in the Christchurch Regatta would be as keen as ever. Members placed on record their appreciation of Mr Kcsteven’s work and expressed a wish for his early; restoration to health.
