Scottish Determination.
The arrival in Glasgow a few weeks ago of a cargo of 8000 tons of iron ore from Sierra Leone was of more than passing interest, seeing that this is the first Crown colony to export iron ore to Britain. Hitherto the greater part of this raw material has been obtained for British heavy industries from foreign countries. Two Scotsmen found iron ore in the heart of the tropical forest of Sierra Leone, where white men, it was said, could not live. With financial assistance they built a railway 52 miles long from the mine to a harbour that had to be constructed. The work took six years.
