Quota Coming.

Dominion Should Begin Planning.

(“Star” Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, November 21. WARNING of the necessity of securing markets for produce before embarking on a small farms scheme, as it is practically definite there will be a British quota on meat next year and on dairy produce the following year, was given by Mr Hargest (Invercargill) in the House to-day. He said he was one of those who justified importing something from the Motherland while at the same time encouraging some of the local industries. Then New Zealand had to face the fact, whether she liked it or not, that Great {Sritain was going to impose a quota on dairy products within two years, and the Dominion should start planning for this eventuality now. New Zealanders must, he urged, recast their ideas of economy and methods of carrying on their country. He hoped the Government would give a lead at once in this vitally important matter, for Denmark, Argentine and the Irish Free State had already begun to plan for the day when these quotas would be an established fact.
