QUAKE IN NEAR EAST.

Great Disturbance is Recorded.

United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, November 21. Mr J. J. Shaw, of West Bromwich, a noted seismologist, announced early this morning that “ a great earthquake occurred at 11.28 p.m., probably in the Near East. The lagest waves were re corded at 11.45 p.m. The record has not yet finished, and the whole work is shaking at the present moment.” The “ Daily Mail ” points out that the needles of Mr Shaw’s instruments moved ten inches, whereas a movement of one-quarter of an inch would be a normal indication of a considerable disturbance. The newspaper adds the opinion that telegraphs and telephones in the affected area are probably completely out of action, thus accounting for the absence of news. It is believed that.the centre of the earthquake is in the vicinity of the Black Sea or the Caspian Sea. WAVES CIRCLED WORLD. (Received November 22, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, November 21. Checking the information from Bombay, an expert at Kew Observatory has decided that the earthquake occurred at Baffin Bay. He points out that if it had been in the Near East, the times at Kew and Bombay would have coincided, but the difference showed that the shake occurred to the north-west and not the south-east of Kew, where the needle moved twelve inches, showing a large disturbance. The waves circled the world several times. “A MIGHTY SHOCK.” A large earthquake was recorded on the seismographs at Sydney and Riverview Obresvatcires yesterday morning, the waves indicating a shock of a mighty nature. It is not known where the shock occurred.
