Swimming continuously for 79 hours 24 minutes at Rangoon lakes, Profulla Ghose, a young Bengali, claims to have broken the world record established by the German girl Ruth Litzig. who in August swam lor nearly 79 hours and later died in hospital. Ghcse, though completely exhausted, was fully c nscious. Prcfulla Ghose, a well-known Bengali swimmer, left the water at the Calcutta swimming bath at 6.48 am. on September 28, after swimming for 72 hours 18 minutes, raising by 15 minutes the previous Empire endurance record, claimed by a Maori woman. Ghose was fed on malted milk and coffee. Ilis trainer said that he was good for another five hours’ swimming. His heart and breathing were normal. It was raining heavily during the test and the water was cold. Thousands of people saw the final hour’s swim. Fireworks and music were employed to divert the swimmer.
