Praise for Christchurch’s Effortc. METROPOLITAN COMMITTEE. “People in the North Island speak wonderfully well of the work done in Christchurch,” said Mr W. W. Scarff, at a meeting of the executive of the Metropolitan Relief of Distress Committee yesterday. “I have just spent three weeks there, and everywhere I went I heard admiration of Christchurch expressed for the way it helped its down and outs.” Mr J. K. Moloney supported the remarks of Mr Scarff and said that while he was in Carterton, Wellington and Palmerston North recently he had had numerous inquiries about the work in Christchurch. “No doubt it has saved the situation here this w’inter,” said the chairman, Mr George Harper. Families Assisted. The report of the director stated that during the fortnight ended August 26, rations were issued to 5577 families, the total value being £635 10s Bd. New applications averaged seventy a week in that time. Applications for coal totalled 1488, and 52£ pairs of blankets were sold for £3l 10s. Mr T. Cape-Willlamson said that complaints about the quality of meat issued had all been met and disproved. The. Rev P. Revell expressed the opinion that complaints would always be heard, especially as there were people going round deliberately trying to stir up trouble.
Major R. A. Row said that during the last few days he had met four different persons who had expressed entire satisfaction with the treatment they had received from the depots.
