GOOD PROSPECTS.

Shield Challenge Game on Saturday. STRONG WEST COAST TEAM. The West Coast representatives will give Canterbury a good run for the Ranfurly Shield in their challenge match at Lancaster Park on Saturday. This season the Coast have a solid team in both the forward and back divisions, and they expect to press the defenders from the kick-off. Last year many critics considered that the West Coast should have beaten Canterbury in the match played at Christchurch. When time was called ten minutes early, the Coast men were pressing hotly and the score stood 14-10 in favour of Canterbury. This ear. Coast are anxious to settle the account, for it was their expressed intention to play this year’s match whether Canterburv lost or retained the Shield. Selector’s View.

Mr A. A. Adams, one of the South Island selectors, who is visiting Christchurch, said that be was very much impressed, by Coast's showing in Seddon Shield games. The West Coast match with Canterbury would provide a display of hard, fast Rugby, with plenty of good open. play. The Coast team was an even lot, he added, and would give Canterbury a hard tussle. Mr Adams mentioned Fong and Hughes, the five-eighths, as being certain of selection in the final team, as was Kirkland, the former Merivale forward. He has been playing good football on the Coast this season. In the five-eighths line, Taafe and Schroeder have been working well together, and it is likely that Martyn will be included with them. Martyn is a handy kick, and will probably convert the West Coast tries and kick the penalties. The West Coast Seddon Shield team, along the lines which a selection may be made, will probably be as follows: G. Gilbert Martyn Taafe Schroeder Fong Hughes B. Scrandrett B. Kelly Kirkland M. Kelly L. Hughes Thompson King M. Scandrett Jones Rulings in Shield Match Discussed. REFEREES’ MEETING. A meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Keferees’ Association was held last evening, Mr R. J. <l. Collins presiding over an attendance of thirty-eight members. The Ashburton Rugby Referees’ Association wrote suggesting that the annual match between the Ashburton and Canterbury Associations should be played at Ashburton on Saturday, September 36. It was agreed to accept this date and to appoint Mr C. M’Lachlan as selector and manager of the Canterbury The question of the number of balls to be used in matches was discussed, the chairman explaining that the New Zealand Rugby Union had suggested that all unions should play with three balls. Otago, however, had refused to accept the suggestion and in the Ranfurly Shield match on-Saturday had insisted upon one ball only. Another question which arose from the Ranfurly Shield match with Otago was whether it was right for the referee to place the ball into the scrummage. It was explained that, according to the rules, the referee could not do so as the ball must be put into the scrum by a player. Another point of Mr M’Kenzie’s rulings which was discussed was the fact that he called half-time without the ball going Into touch. He had done so on an infringement which would have resulted in a scrummage, and this was quite correct as the rule states that time can be called as soon as the ball becomes dead. Training for Teams. Training for both the Canterbury A and Canterbury B teams will be held at Buckett’s gymnasium to-night at 7.30. Malvern beat Peninsula. The annual match between the Peninsula ‘Sub-Union and Malvern, which was played at Kirwee on Saturday resulted in a win for Malvern by 8 points to 5. Mr Smith was referee. The Peninsula officials and team were entertained to a dinner after the match. • Remaining matches for the Malvern Sub-Unior/s season are:—September 2: Competition final, Glentunnel v. Sheffield (Mr Westwood). September 9: Canterbury B v. Malvern, at Barfield (Mr Westwood). September 16: • Seven-a-side at Glentunnel. ASHBURTON UNION. Rakaia Club’s Protest Out of Order. (Special to the "Star.”) ASHBURTON, August 28. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met to-night. Mr J. C. C. M’Lachlan was in the chair. The New Zealand Rugby Union advised that the Rakaia. Club’s protest, which had been sent on to the union for It* opinion, had been considered by the committee. It had been ruled that the protest was out of order in that it wag not submitted in the time allowed by the rules. The matter of playing a junior in a third grade game was one which should be dealt with by the Ashburton Union. The club had its remedy in this case and should proceed in a constitutional way. It was decided to advise the Rakaia Club accordingly. Representative Matches. The following team was selected to represent Ashburton County against North Otago at Oamaru next Satur-day;—Full-back, J. For the first time, the principal trophies of the Rugby and Association football codes, the Ranfurly .Shield ami the Football Association Trophy, were located in one city, when the Auckland representative Soccer team brought the Football Association Trophy to Christchurch last evening. On arrival by the express from Dunedin, the visitors were met by officials of tire Canterbury Football Association. In the evening they were the guests of the Athletes’ Dance Assembly at the Frascati, where Mr P. C. Davies, president of the Canterbury Football Association, extended a welcome. Mr A. E. Backhouse, manager of the team responded. "It is our one regret,” he said, "that we are unable to play a game here. Had Canterbury lodged a challenge earlier, Auckland would have been very willing to play a game for the trophy in Christchurch on the team's return from Dunedin. I am certain that the Auckland Association would welcome a trophy match with Canterbury.” _ The team left to-day for Greymouth, where a match with Westland will be played to-morrow. On Thursday the team will return to Christchurch, leaving for Auckland the same evening.
