Eight Missionaries Hemmed in by Bandits. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. PEKIN, August 26. Silence has settled on the fate of the eight American Catholic missionaries who are in the beleaguered town of Yuanchow, in the Province of Huan. Government forces in the town have been besieged for two months by bandits led by the notorious rebel, Chen. The bandits are pressing the defenders of the town, of which there are reported to be two thousand, with a year’s supply of rice. The American authorities are redoubling their efforts to obtain s P r * conduct for the foreigners, among who are six women. The siege was precipitated by the bandit chief’s abortive plot to murder a visiting Government general.
