GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS.
A. K. Smith Retains Coast Title. (Special to the "Star.**) HOKITIKA, August 28 The West Coast golf championships were concluded on Saturday afternoon. The men’s final, played over thirtysix holes, was won by the title holder, A. K. Smith, of Grevmouth, who defeated Adamson, of Hokitika, 2 up and 1. The match was a very interesting one. There was little difference between the players on the tees and fairways, but Adamson was in poor form on the greens, which was the chief factor in Smith’s win. In the morning round Smith was early in form, and was 4 up at the seventh. Adamson steadied and retrieved the position, and assumed the lead. Both played steadily. The morning round ended with Smith 2 up. The winner maintained the lead, increasing it to 5 up and 6, but Adamson played magnificently, reducing Smith’s lead *o 1 up and 2. Bad putting lost Adamson the thirty-seventh hole and the match. The ladies’ final resulted in Mrs Cunningham (Grey) defeating Miss Griffin (Grey), 7 up and 6. The winner played consistently throughout, driving and approaching well. Miss Griffen was not playing up to her usual form. The veterans' match was won by Kettle (Grey), who defeated Waines (Grey), 2 up and 1.
