USE OF RELIEF LABOUR.
Standard Rate of Wages Recommended. The Canterbury Workers’ District Council recently wrote to the Minister of Employment, the Hon Adam Hamilton, protesting against the action of the Ileathcote County Council in utilising relief labour under Scheme No. 5 in the construction of a septic tank. In reply, the Hon J. G. Cobbe, on behalf of the Minister of Employment, stated that he was arranging for the matter to be taken up with the Heathcote County Council in an endeavour to induce the council to make up the relief wages of those workers engaged on skilled work to the standard rate of wages payable for the particular class of work on which they were engaged.
