New Official Needed.
Dear Sir,—lt seems to me that Rugby needs a new official, or rather two; that is to say, an independent referee stationed in the in-goal area between the posts, to watch for potted goals particularly, but also to save the ordinary linesmen from the unseemly race to and from the sidelines, especially where, after a short kick at goal from a penalty, the defending side carries the ball immediately into play. Such an official is part of the Australian game, and occupies a position, with signalling flags, between the posts. In Rugby he is an absolute necessity, because the referee may be in an impossible position to see a potted goal, and has either to guess whether it was right or disallow a four-point score.—l am. etc..
