SIR GUY WINS BIG HANDICAP.

Gains Neck Victory Over Red Shadow at Addington To-day. GAY GORDON CREATES SURPRISE. THE Grand National Week Racing Carnival opened to-day with the first day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s mid-winter meeting, at Addington. The weather was line hut threatening. There was a large attendance, including many visitors from all parts of New Zealand. The track was holding. Sustaining a strong finishing run over the last two furlongs, Sir Guy was able to hold on and beat Red Shadow by a neck for the August Handicap, which was the principal event on the programme. Sunny Morn was third. The winner of the Trial Handicap, Gay Gordon, vs as one of the little fancied runners, being tenth favourite on the win machine and thirteenth on the place machine. Another outsider, Gemlight, won the Stewards’ Handicap. He was eleventh favourite each wax'.

Won by a length, three lengths separating second and third. Times—2m in Notes From the Course. After waiting on Stanley Bingen until the straight was entered. Lough Guy challenged him, carrying him to a break inside the distance, and went on to win the Introductory Handicap by two lengths. Stanley Bingen finished three lengths ahead of Great Burton, with New Metford close up fourth. Katute led for just over two furlongs, where she left her feet, and Belle Lorrimer faulted at the end of a furlong. Cannonball handled the going easily, but failed to stay. Worthy Queen was not at home m the heavy ground. Lough Guv was a substantial favourite with £2lß' 10s and £179 10s. Stanley Bingen carried £3l and £B2, and Great Burton was entrusted with £lB 10s and £B4. Rey Spec Wins Easily. Rey Spec began quickly in the Advance Handicap and got to the front at the end of a furlong and a half, where he remained to win very easily by four lengths from Tangatu, who lost two lengths at the start through putting in a skip before he straightened away to his work. Olive Rey was first cut of the barrier, but after racing prominently for six furlongs she stopped badly. Tangatu ran into second place at the end of six and a half furlongs and went after Rey Spec, but he could not bridge the gap. Good Companion filled third place, being fifteen lengths further back. Tangatu was favourite on the win machine with £316 10s, and he carried £l5B 10s on the place machine. Rey Spec carried £ll6 10s and £156. There were only two dividends in this race. August Handicap. Taking charge two and a half furlongs from home Sir Guy lasted long enough to beat Red Shadow by a neck in the August Handicap. Linkman made the pace for a mile and a quarter to Gold Tinge, Silver de Oro, Sunny Morn, Colorado, Mountain Dell, First Flight, Sir Guy, Red Shadow, Glenrossie and Lindbergh. At that stage of the contest, Gold Tinge and Mountain Dell drew level with Linkman and the field closed up. Turning into the back straight Mountain Dell took possession and raced to the far turn with Gold Tinge, Sir Guy, Colcrodo, Sunny Morn, Silver de Oro doing the best of the others. Rounding the far turn Sir Guy rushed to the front and led into the straight wih Gold Tinge, Mountain Dell, Sunny Morn, Colorodo, First Flight and Silver de Oro after him. Red Shadow being back in eighth place at the home bend. Half way down the straight Mountain Dell, Gold Tinge and Silver de Oro stopped badly, and Colorodo was under pressure. A hundred yards from home Red Shadow came from the ruck, and finishing well got to within a neck of Sir Guy. Colorado was favourite with £270 and £273. Sir Guv carried £93 and £IS9, Red Shadow £36 10s and £lO3 and Sunny Morn £7l and £172. Win for Outsider. An outsider in Gay Gordon won the Trial Handicap by half a length from Purser after being in the thick of the fight all the way. After Pageant d’Or had made the running for ten furlongs Blue Mountain and Reporter headed him with Denver City, Wild Guy, Gay Gordon, Purser and Pronto. Bingen well placed. Turning for heme Purser made his run and got to the front a furlong from the judge, but Gay Gordon then put in his claim and beat Purser by half a length, Pronto Bingen beating the others for third money. Suncross broke at the start. Reporter was favourite with £325 and £265. Gar Gordon carried £2O 10s and £49 10s. Purser had £34 10s and £9O invested on his chance. Pronto Bingen carried £l9 10s and £62. Gemlight All the Way. Gemlight was in the picture all the way in the Stewards’ Handicap and, staying on well in the straight, he won by a length from Great Burton, who contested every inch of the journey with the winner. Nicoya made a good run going along the back the last time, to be on terms with Gemlight and Great Burton at the bend for home, but he tired in the straight. Huon Voyage finished in great style to secure third prize. New Metford broke up at the start. First Wrack and Ukulele Lady went a good race. First Wrack was favourite with £l6l 10s and £169. Gemlight carried £l2 and £37. Great Burton £43 10s and £llO 10s, and Huon Voyage £l7 and £57 10s. Craganour’s Fine Win. Craganour won the Queen Mary Handicap in convincing style from Tactless and John Jinks. Somerby and Avernus were at the head of Master Roy, Jolly Wave and John Jinks for a mile and a half, where John Jinks dashed past his opponents to lead round the far bend. At that stage "of the race Craganour, Gunfire, Jolly Wave and Tactless were putting in good work. John Jinks was first in line for home, but Craganour and Tactless finished too well for him, Craganour winning by three lengths from Tactless, who beat John Jinks by a neck. Craganour was a. hot favourite with £464 and £328. Tactless carried £55 10s and £lO3 10s. and John Jinks £231 10s and £233 10s.

Indianapolis An Easy Winner. Indianapolis won the Selwyn Handicap very easily. He was fourth with six furlongs to go, but, taking charge a round from home, he won by as much as his driver wanted him to. Ningongingo made the early running to Raydus, Probationer and Indianapolis, with Sodium, Ron and Major Lind next. Vesuvius made a run going along the baclc straight to take second place at the mile post, with Ron and Probationer doing the best of the others. Once in line for home Indianapolis had no difficulty in warding off a challenge from Vesuvius, and won by a length and a half. Ron was third and Probationer Jourth. Indianapolis carried £589 10s and £5lO, Versuvius £B4 10s and £169 and Ron £45 and £ll7. Paced Brilliantly. Nelson’s Victory and Roddy, who finished first and second in the International Handicap, broke at the start. They paced in brilliant style to be close to the leaders at the bend for home. Sustaining their run they headed their opponents at the distance, Nelson’s Victory winning by a length from Roddy, with Wilma Dillon three lengths away third. Muriel d’Oro, who was hard driven all down the straight, was a head further away fourth. Eureka Boy was in the lead at the stand, but he broke twice entering the back stretch. Brent Zolock l and Arethusa were at the head of the field going along the back, but both tired in the straight. Eureka Boy was favourite on the win machine with £199 and he had £164 10s invested on his chance on the place machine. The Nelson’s Victory and Brent Zolock bracket carried £157 and £196, Roddy £B7 10s and £127, and the Wilma Dillon—Free Advice bracket £6O and £94. TOTE INVESTMENTS. Investments on the totalisator at the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s midwinter meeting at Addington to-day totalled £ 17,971, as compared with £13,791 10s for the opening of the meet ing last year, which was held on a Monday owing to a postponement from the preceding Saturday on account of wet weather. EXPLANATION ACCEPTED. The judicial committee met to consider the driving of Red Shadow by J. Bryce in the August Handicap and decided to accept the explanation. More Horses Arrive. The highly fancied Winter Cup candidates, Beacon Fire and Foreign Queen, arrived from Wellington by the ferry steamer this morning. Takakua and Eminent also came by the same l steamer. *
