A Matter of History.
Dear Sir, —I was asked a question the other day concerning the early kings of England, and as I could not answer it myself, I decided to write you to see if you could so do. Edward the martyr King of England reigned somewhere about 975 A.D.; Edward the Confessor somewhere about 1042; then Edward the First about 1272. Why is it that the third King Edward was known as Edward the First? I cannot find any reason for this in the history books in my possession.—I am. etc., W. I BRADLEY. By convention, the Edwards are always regarded as starting from the Norman Conquest. The earlier Edwards were merely Kings of the English, but Edward 1.. the first of the Plantagenet Dynasty, was King of England.—Ed., “ Star.”
